When Arsene Wenger made his departure from the Emirates in the summer of 2018, it was heralded as the final death knock for the old-school longevity of Premier League managers. Gone were the days of a Sir Alex Ferguson or Wenger staying in charge of a club for more than two decades and moulding it in their image.
But as Liverpool bask in the success of their Champions League triumph at the end of last season, it’s becoming slightly more discernible that the Reds have a manager at the helm who is just as influential as those two Premier League legends.

Jurgen Klopp’s time at Anfield has been nothing short of rock-and-roll. The German has brought back the glory days to Anfield and done it in a way where the red half of Merseyside have rallied behind him like very few before. Players and fans cling on to his every word, and get caught up in the emotion of his touchline antics. There simply isn’t another Klopp around.
And that’s perhaps why his latest comments on his long-term future could be a slight cause for concern. The former Borussia Dortmund boss admitted that whilst he would honour the remaining three years of his contract, what the future held for him beyond that remained to be seen.
He said (as quoted by The Telegraph): “I will not leave before the contract is ending. That is my side. That is why a contract is important. We have enough time to make decisions in that department. There is no need to do it now. Three years is really a bit early to be concerned. It is just a contract.
“I don’t want ever to be in a situation where people are annoyed that I am still here. That’s the truth. You have that situation in football. It must always be a win-win situation. At the moment, it is 100 per cent and we will see how long that will be.”

Klopp’s personality has overwhelmed the club and his footprints are there for everyone to see. Just like both Manchester United and Arsenal have struggled in the aftermath of their two long-serving managers leaving, the Reds could find themselves in a similar position were their talismanic German to up sticks.
So whilst the Reds might be preoccupied with taking down Manchester City next season for the Premier League title, they could be facing an ever bigger mountain to climb if they are unable to convince Klopp to stay in the longer-term.
